DO YOU HAVE A BODY IMAGE DISORDER?

At some point in our lives, some of us have been acquainted with someone who thinks that they are fat, ugly, or something else negative. Reality dictates that this is the trademark of a mental disorder which affects the emotional well-being of a lot of people. This dysfunction is called body image disorder. The good news is that it can still be avoided and corrected.

Body Image Disorder – What It Is?

A body image disorder refers to the condition wherein one views himself or herself as they think they are, not as what they actually are. This is the sad reality that explains why someone who can already be considered as skin and bones views him or herself as fat. This is something negative and should never have happened in the first place. However, sad to say, this happens a lot in our modern world.

It is very important to understand that this type of disorder somehow affects more women compared to men. However, it does not mean that men are excluded. The sadder situation is that this disorder tends to affect more young girls than any other age group. As a matter of fact, most women or girls who are suffering from body image disorder continue to carry it towards their teen years.

Because of this, body image disorder is one of the primary causes of depression and other anxiety related disorders. This can result to the feeling of being ‘less’. Because of inferiority, they fail to see themselves for what they really are. This leads to the destruction of their self-worth and self-identity. Further, this can lead to more serious social dysfunctions as well.

Body image disorder is something that is not fun at all. It should not be tolerated; however, caution should also be exercised in reprimanding a person who views himself in a negative light.

Keep in mind that there is something wrong with the mental functions of the person who has it. Telling a person off to stop from doing this negative thing may only lead to further problems in the end.

One of the most difficult aspects involved in dealing with body image disorder is that there is no way to tell where or how it originated. It may be developed by a person, by himself, or with the influence of others. Whatever the cause may be, it is very important to treat this viewpoint as soon as possible. This can be done by seeking the assistance of a professional, or by engaging in healthy activities, such as healthy programs for weight loss or other programs that can significantly improve the well-being of a person.

By changing the viewpoint of a person, this condition may still be treated.
